What should I consider before making my first investment?
Example context: a beginner with a long-term goal. Country, debt costs, cash reserves and risk tolerance are unknown.
First separate the money you may need soon from money intended for a long-term goal. Compare investment choices by diversification, fees and how easily you can access the money. A diversified fund still carries market risk.
I would ask about essential expenses, cash reserves and debt payments before choosing an investment amount. A contribution you can maintain through an expensive month is more useful than an ambitious amount you repeatedly reverse.
Long-term does not mean risk-free. Ask what you would do if the investment fell sharply, whether a withdrawal could become necessary and whether you understand the product. We do not yet have enough context to choose an allocation.
Agreement: define the goal and protect near-term cash needs. Unresolved: affordability and suitable risk level. Research next: local account rules, product fees, withdrawal terms and a contribution amount you can sustain.
